A Civil War era picture book about seven-year-old Charlie who cannot afford a straw hat and, with help from his mother and grandmother, they make one. Based on a family folktale (a 'memorat') and illustrated by Mary Szilagyi, it follows Charlie’s adventures on Frozen Creek in Kentucky.
