Coketown was a town of fact. There was no fancy in it. You saw nothing but what was severely workful. The churches were built like the factories. The hospital looked like the prison. All the public notices in the town were painted alike in plain black and white letters. Thus Dickens sets the scene for his novel Hard Times.
