The patterns of medical care organisation adopted by a country depend on many factors, among them its historical traditions, geographical characteristics, degree of economic development and political system. The eight countries—Belgium, Canada, Ecuador, the Federal Republic of Germany, India, Poland, Tunisia and the United Kingdom—whose medical care schemes serve as the basis for this general study were chosen because of the variety of solutions they offer to the problem of organising medical care under social security. After analysing and evaluating the patterns adopted in each of the countries for the organisation of medical care, the author deals with special problems such as disease prevention, safeguards and disability certification, and discusses resource development and allocation, quality and cost controls and the co-ordination of health schemes at the national and international levels.
