This book is intended to provide a rapid but efficient grounding in educated colloquial Greek with special attention to accurate pronunciation. Part I is a detailed account of the sounds and their behaviour in continuous speech, and explains the variations of stress-accent. Part II is an outline of accidence and syntax, in graded chapters, with word-lists and substitution-tables at the earlier stages to enable the reader to construct sentences from the beginning.
The material is presented in phonetic transcription, with parallel orthography for those wishing to write down what they learn to say.
The amount of grammar included is the essential minimum; and it will be found that the memorising of declensions and conjugations is rendered easier by a phonetic approach. Ample attention, however, is given to the use of cases and all the common constructions, which are illustrated by many examples in colloquial idiom.
