About the Authors
Louis Gottschalk (1899–1975) was a prominent historian specializing in the French Revolution and the Marquis de Lafayette. He was a professor at the University of Chicago and served as the president of the American Historical Association.
Donald F. Lach (1917–2000) was also a professor at the University of Chicago and a renowned authority on the influence of Asia on European civilization from the 16th to 18th centuries. He is best known for his monumental series, Asia in the Making of Europe. He and Gottschalk co-authored several books together.
